Lemon Water – Amazing Health Benefits from a Simple Drink

Ayurvedic sciences recommend drinking a glass of lemon water in the morning. They feel it’s important to make this one of the first items you accomplish in the morning, as it is thought the routines and habits that we create and maintain determine our level of well-being.

It’s not only Ayurveda – there are many proven benefits of lemons, and drinking lemon water. First – since 60% of our body is comprised of water and every system in our body depends on water for our well being it is vital that we stay hydrated! This means listening to our body and drinking enough clean H20 (not soda, or juice – way too much sugar!) to keep it satisfied. Water is important to deliver nutrients to our cells and to help flush toxins out.

Adding lemon to water can boost this detoxification process. Vitamin C cleanses and purifies the blood and boosts liver functioning and promotes cell and tissue growth. It’s important that what we put into our body is clean, healthy food so that when our cells and tissues are regrown, they are healthy & strong themselves. Because it removes these toxins, it results in clearer skin and a healthier immune system and provides the body with antioxidants and electrolytes to keep us the body operating efficiently.

Citric acid found in lemons can also help to clean out the body. This acid can clear out and prevent calcium stones and deposits from occurring in our arteries. It also aids in digestion along with pectin fibers. For this reason lemon water is a good choice when experiencing an upset stomach. Lemons also have a lot of other minerals that are good for your colon and digestive systems that can settle the stomach if experiencing nausea or vomiting by neutralizing the offending bacteria.

Two of these minerals are potassium and folate. The former builds protein and muscle and maintains normal body growth. It keeps our heart healthy by regulating its electrical activity and relaxing the muscles around the heart. Folate also helps with cardiovascualar conditions and can boost brain health, prevent against cancer, certain psychiatric illnesses.

Finally. lemons are an alkaline food, and something I’m learning more about is regulating the pH level of the body. I have started taking my pH level each morning upon waking and taking magnesium and another supplement as necessary. According to MindBodyGreen, alkaline bodies are the key to good health.
