Simple Tips To Give New Gardeners Confidence
If you are just starting to garden, there are a few things you'll want to be sure to take care of for greater success. Here's a brief list of 5 things you should attend to for gardening success:
- Make sure your soil is good. It is the literal foundation of your plantings. Start in the fall by layering compost (leaves, dirt, household scraps, etc.) over the area you wish to plant. Turn it with a pitchfork weekly throughout the winter, and by spring, you should have some pretty nice soil to work with.
- Plant easy plants in your first garden, such as radishes, squash, zucchini, tomatoes and beans. These are veggies that grow fast and well and will give you lots of gardening confidence. Be sure to plant in a nice sunny area for these garden classics.
- Be sure to water the right amount. The soil around your plants should feel lightly moist - not wet - when you poke your finger into it several hours after watering. Using a soaker hose covered with a good layer of mulch will help you accomplish effective watering.
- Watch out for weeds, but be sure you can identify them before you begin pulling! You don't want to pull up your crop! A good heavy mulch around your plantings will help deter weeds. A thick layer of leaves, straw or wood chips will do the trick.
- Don't over fertilize your plants. In fact, don't use chemical fertilizers at all. If you do a good job composting and keep your garden mulched, you will have an ongoing source of all natural plant food in your soil.
