Growing And Using Lemon Thyme

lemon thyme Even if I had no other uses for lemon thyme I would still grow it just for its wonderful fresh lemon scent and attractive leaves. But I also enjoy using it for cooking. Its mild citrusy tang works wonderfully with sea food dishes, salad dressings, vinegars and soups. My neighbor adds chopped fresh leaves to her sugar cookie recipe and the cookies are delicious.  One of my favorite ways to use it is to blend a tablespoon or two of chopped fresh leaves with a package of cream cheese and use this spread on toasted bagels , flatbread or crackers.

Tea made from the leaves is touted as a digestive aid, cough relief and help for sore muscle aches. Just pour boiling water over about 1/4 cup of the chopped fresh leaves and steep for about five minues before straining.

You can plant lemon thyme in the garden or in pots or hanging baskets. Just be sure to place it in full sun. New plants can be propagated from leaf cuttings or by dividing the root ball. You can start it yourself from seeds of purchase at a nursery. I think you'll enjoy it.
