Thilo is a computer scientist by training with a PhD in pattern recognition and, after having initially worked in speech signal processing, has since 2002 been working in applied research in animal bio mechanics at the Royal Veterinary College. Thilo's special interest is in applied clinical gait analysis in horses with multi-limb lameness and poor performance, as well as in research into racehorse bio mechanics and into the effect of farriery on locomotor bio mechanics. • “Don't just look at the legs! The link between lameness and movement of the upper body” • “‘OutSmarted': measure movement asymmetry with your smartphone” • “Advances in applied equine movement symmetry analysis (requires the others as a basis)” • Presenting the innovative EquiGait gait analysis system for horses in action. The system comes in 3 different variants and assesses movement of the upper body of the horse (head, withers, pelvis +/-thoracolumbar area) in all gaits in the unridden or ridden horse. Gait analysis results are available within seconds of the measurement, for immediate presentation to the participants and supporting an interactive discussion about the effects of farriery on changes in weight distribution and propulsive effort of each evaluated horse. The measurements and their presentation as illustrations and in number format add a level of objectivity to the evaluation of any changes created by changes in trimming and/or shoeing. Measurements can be performed in-hand on the straight as well as on the lunge and under the rider and can be performed on all surfaces. Typical uses of the system (other than assessment of effects of shoeing) are the quantitative assessment of changes in gait in the clinical lameness exam or the examination of horses presenting with poor performance. Direc, for example before and after shoeing changes, can be easily prepared in the dedicated software. Setup of the system can be performed in a matter of minutes (2-4 minutes).
