Due to the negative stigma classically assigned to sharks, they’ve often fallen victim to humans seeking a feeling of power. This is partially where shark fishing tournaments come in. . Who can catch the biggest shark? Then what? You straddle it or hang it from its tail for a photo to generate likes on social media? Great - now you’ve killed an essential part of the ecosystem that is likely vulnerable or endangered and (likely) took decades to reach that size and was finally sexually mature. . ‘But what if we just eat the shark after?’ Shark meat isn’t good for you to eat. The risk of consuming dangerous levels of mercury isn’t good for you. If you don’t NEED to eat shark meat, why would you? Choose a more sustainable food source. . Sharks belong in the ocean - not discarded after fighting for its life so that someone could take a photo with it.
