#Repost @lorettabates with @get_repost ・・・ Zumba is not about COMPETITION, but rather COOPERATION. In a competition, you have two or more people or groups going against each other in order to achieve a prize, or coveted position. In the end, one group or person is left feeling as if the are the “winner” or the “best” and everyone else is left to feel...well, like losers. Cooperation is people working together, pooling strengths and abilities for the embetterment of all. Don’t get me wrong, I do believe there is a time and place for healthy competition, but not when the variables are so vast and, well, varied. Let’s take for example two instructors. One has a class of 100 people, the other has a class of 5. Who is the winner? Most would say the one with a class of 100. But what if I told you that the one with the class of 100 didn’t care about their students, only getting paid, came in taught the class and went home. But the one with the class of 5 has gotten to know each participant in a significant way, and has seen life change in each one. Now who is the “winner”. What if I told you the person with a class of 100 was volunteering in an low income area, drove an hour each way to get there, and was making a huge impact on a community. Where as the instructor with 5 was teaching at a country club and getting paid massive amounts of money to teach, but was always late and left early because they really didn’t even want to be there. Now who is the “winner”. “But Loretta, some instructors are just BAD, they can’t even keep the beat!” They should t be allowed to teach! Tell that to the person who was always afraid to go to the gym, and now does because for once they found someone who moves and hears music like they do. There are so many different factors, variables, strengths, gifting, talents, amongst us as instructors and humans that it can seem silly to pit us against each other! In mos sports, they try to even the playing field with gender categories, weight categories, age categories, but in life we are not separated into categories. And yet we are all valuable, and when we are able to get over trying to be the BEST, and begin workin
