Tips to maintain natural stones

Natural stone is categorized as Calcareous or Siliceous. Calcareous stone is composed primarily of calcium carbonate, a compound found in shells and pearls. Calcium Carbonate is sensitive to acidic products so mild and non-acidicstone carecleaners are recommended. While Siliceous stones are composed of silicates like quartz, feldspar, mica, etc. These siliceous stones are generally resistant to most acids found in kitchen settings, although acidic cleaners are still not suggested, as these stones may contain trace levels of minerals that are much acid sensitive.

1.Seal Your Stone to Prevent Staining
Most of the natural stones are porous, that means it can absorb staining agents in spilled liquids, dropped food and other matters. To defend against staining, most natural stone counter-tops should be properly sealed and re-sealed as required.
You can easily check if your stone floors and counter tops are needed to be sealed. Just put a bit of water on the most-used areas and let it sit for four to five minutes before wiping it away. If the area where the water was applied leaves a dark spot, the stone absorbed the water, and you must proceed with sealing.

2.Clean Only with Proper Stone-Safe Products
For routine cleaning and Stone care you should use a pH neutral cleaner specifically designated safe for natural stone like Tikko stone care products. Avoid any cleaner that is acidic or abrasive in nature. Even cleaning your natural stone with dish soap water can create a filmy buildup and possibly even discolor the stone, depending on the soap’s components. Using glass cleanser can be even worse, as it may sooner or later dull the polish. If you are cleansing mirrors above delicate vanity tops, avoid over spray of cleaning product.

3.Avoid Damage
Calcite based stone like onyx bar top and your marble vanities are sensitive to acidic spills, so always be cautious to use tea coasters under glasses and clean up spills as rapidly as possible. When working on  delicate vanity tops, never display perfumes and cosmetics directly on the surface but rather use a pretty tray to get them. Granite is tougher, still it is recommended to take reasonable precautions. Most natural granite can take the heat, but don’t take unneeded chances. Make use of trivets under hot pans.Try to minimize exposure to heavy and direct sunlight. UV rays on some stone can result in discoloration.
