Nadine Gourkow  knows that no one lives forever. That is a sad fact of life. In fact, humans are the only species that we know of that knows they are going to die from an early age. That is not to say that others don’t realize they are going to die, we just don’t have any proof that they know. Being armed with that knowledge allows us to take steps to increase our lifespan. There are many things that you can do and that is going to be the topic of our discussion here today.

 

Steps to a Healthier Heart

We don’t mean to bum you out with all this death talk. However, it is a discussion that we need to have. If you want to have a long life, you might have to do some things that you may not particularly like or want to do. Since most people want to live a long time, we think that you all might find a few things on the list below that will help you do just that.

 

  1. Go for a walk – It doesn’t have to be a long walk, but it does have to be enough to get your heart rate up. If you are only walking to the bathroom and back or to the car and back every day, this is simply not enough. When we say you need to go for a walk, we mean to walk over and above what you are already walking. Your daily life does not count when it comes to this tally. So, just go for a walk around the block, walk to the store, walk to a park, etc.
  2. Lift stuff – You may not want to or are unable to go to the gym. You don’t have to. Think of all the prisoners that are in solitary confinement. They somehow figure out how to stay fit. They lift things that they have around them. You can do the same. If you have books lying around, you could lift those. Perhaps you have full containers of laundry soap that you bought on special, lift those. There are a lot of things that you can safely lift around the house that will help your strength training.
  3. Fruit – If you are eating it, eat one extra. If you are not eating it, it is time that you start. If you only have one a day it will help a lot. You do need to work your way up to more, but as with anything it is about baby steps. Don’t go all in right from the start or you will soon tire of it and find that you stop doing it all together.

Start with the changes on this list and work from there. It is not something that is going to happen overnight, but if you make the small changes you will find that your heart will be in better health the next time you visit the doctor.
