RedGage Money-Maker Memo 5:

Setting Creative Goals

We all go through dry spells when we just can't find our creative juices.  I have noticed that some of our more active users give themselves goals that revolve around their content.  My 'to-do' list keeps my life together and I am someone who enjoys a little structure.

Committing to a creative goal is something that often takes the backseat to work, family, and friends.  It is an important part of our life that needs to be exercised just as much as our bodies, so why not try setting goals?  Here are a few fun ideas...

1) 365 Projects:
A 365 day project is just what it sounds like- a year long commitment to your content.  Maybe you decide to do a 365: Self Portrait project, where you post a photo of yourself each day (like saranel or lornagirl ).  Or if you like to write, you can start a 365 Blog project that reminds you to post a piece of your writing each day.

It might be a difficult challenge, but making room for content creation in our daily routines might be the perfect way to start a pattern.  Think of it as a new year's resolution that you can start at any time.  RedGage veteran Markality counts down on the bottom of each blog and is more than halfway through his year!  I tip my hat to anyone who can handle a 365 challenge!

2) Theme Days:
If committing to a daily goal is unrealistic, try a weekly goal.  By giving themes to your days, it can help you stay focused and give your viewers something to look forward to.  Depending on your interests and hobbies the ideas are endless....

Monday Movie Mentions
(review your favorite movies)
Tell a Joke Tuesday (share a funny story or a joke in blog or video)
Website Wednesday (post a link to one of your favorite websites)
Tacky Thursday (upload an old photo of something that you used to wear)
Family Recipe Friday (share photos and recipes of the food you are eating)
Singing Saturday (post links to your favorite musicians)
Sunday Sports Review (share a son's soccer game or a professional team you are rooting for)

3) Create a challenge:
Creating a challenge for RedGagers is a unique way to meet new users and find inspiration.  Not only do you get to socialize around content, but you can also promote your own work.  Soulosphere is a pro at this and I recommend checking out some of her Caption Contests and Creative Challenges

Ask users to vote on which book you should read, what you should title your next publication, what song you should sing on a video, etc.  If you are looking for feedback, support, or critiques- look no further!  There is a supportive community all around you.  RedGagers give me great ideas all of the time and the feedback sends me in directions I wouldn't normally think of.

4) Find assignments
Digging up old homework assignments might not sound like your idea of 'fun' but it might hold some potential.  When I think of all of those creative writing courses I took, I am thankful I am a pack-rat and keep everything.  Even if you don't have your old books or assignments, there is so much available online.  From free home-schooling material online to book club ideas in the back of your favorite novel, there are assignments all over the place.  I find old text books at used book stores for pennies because newer editions have replaced the old ones.  Maybe your kids have books that are going to waste also!

While it might take some extra time and a tab more motivation (since I am not worrying about a GPA these days), setting goals for myself helps light a fire under my creative side.  Even if it isn't an academic assignment, perhaps you just need to give yourself a deadline for something you have been meaning to do.  Maybe by the end of the month, I will finally scan all of my grandparents' old photos and post them online!  Whether we are attempting to create new material or trying to organize our older content, we can all help each other grow.
