Home remedies for Bladder Infections

Bladder infections can be painful. Infections of the bladder are known as cystitis or inflammation of the bladder. Women get them allot more than men, you very rarely hear of a man getting a bladder infection. About 20% of all women will get at least one bladder infection at some time in their lives. However, a man’s chance of getting cystitis increases as he ages due to in part to an increase in prostate size.Researchers and doctors are not really sure what causes a bladder infection and why they get them so much more than men but they suspect it may be because women have a shorter urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the bladder. This short passageway — is only around an inch and a half long and this makes it easier for bacteria to find their way into the bladder. Also, the opening to a woman’s urethra lies close to both the vagina and the anus. That makes it easier for bacteria from those areas to get into the urinary track. Some symptoms of a bladder infection are pain in the lower back or side pain – this is where the kidneys are located, sometimes vomiting, a fever can be present in bladder infections, usually when there is a fever present this will indicate a possible kidney infection, shakes or chills, burning or painful urination, the feeling of having to urinate badly and never being able to and Cloudy, bloody, or foul-smelling urine. Not all people will have these exact symptoms. If you suspect you have a bladder infection than it is best to see your doctor, if your bladder infection is not to severe there are a few home remedies you can do at home to help the symptoms.

  • Try adding a teaspoon of lemon juice to 180 ml of boiling water. Allow the mixture to cool and sip 60 ml of the lemon water every two hours, starting at 8 am and ending at noon. This home remedy has been known to subside the burning sensation.

  • Make sure to drink plenty of fluids especially water, drinks such as cranberry juice and water have been known to slow down development of cystitis.

  • Take Vitamin C every day this will acidify your urine; it also will help to destroy bacteria. Take acidophilus to help regain normal bacterial flora in your body.

  • Wash your genitals with plain water each time you urinate, good hygiene is important in dealing with bladder infections or any infections of the vagina, wash and a few more times over the course of the day then you normally would. Avoid using a douche, unless you’re doctor has advised you to do so, as this treatment can cause more harm than good.

  • Eat some watermelon as much as you can, boil celery, asparagus and parsley until soft and drink it, the more you drink better. The taste is not pleasant, but it works great on bladder infections, refrain from adding anything to make it taste better, the point is to take it in pure form.
This is not professional medical advice, and it is always good to discuss your symptoms with your doctor first.
