Book Review: The Truth about Vampires, by Theresa Myers

'The Truth about Vampires ' is the first in a series of books by Theresa Myers. The book is very firmly in the 'Paranormal Romance' genre, but from a publisher such as Harlequin that's exactly what you would expect. The books promotional text reads:

All her life, Seattle reporter Kristin Reed sought her breakout story. She never thought she'd find it in the crimson lair of a real-life creature of the night. Kristin never believed vampires existed—until with dark brooding eyes and a decadent chocolate scent, Dmitri Dionotte called out to her….

Dmitri and his clan's true nature was cloaked in secrecy until a warring vampire order threatened their existence. Kristin was just the woman he needed. She couldn't resist their story…or Dmitri. Her blood pulsed hot and furious when he touched her, and with his kiss, all logic fled. But each night she spent with her vampire lover brought her closer to death and destruction. A death not even an immortal could triumph over.”

The book is fast paced and there's lots to hold the readers attention, love, lust, vampire turf wars, black market dealings, but sometimes there's a little too much. There are certain plot threads in the book which are started but don't seem to go anywhere, something that's not uncommon when author are planning to write a series, rather than a stand alone book that there may be sequels to.

The characters can be a little clichéd too. Kristin leads the way as the plucky but sweet reporter, trying to make it in a man's world. Dimitri the dark brooding, flawed but heroic, leading man.

Sometimes you will find a character do or say something with out explanation, or sometimes just infuriatingly stupid. Ultimately though this book does exactly what it sets out to. Myers knows her target audience and has written with them in mind. This book is your standard, modern vampire, female targeted, romance novel. If you want something quick paced and steamy to relax with whilst sipping a good bottle of red wine, this is the book you are looking for.

If you love Christine Feehan's 'Dark Carpathians ' this is definitely a series of books worth adding to your collection. It will be very interesting to see how the books in this series develop, I hope some of the plot lines find their conclusion and that we learn more about the characters motivations as it continues.
