Backlinks are one of the most important factors in the search engine rankings and a high percentage of search engine optimization (SEO) techniques focus on this in an effort to improve a site's ranking. Without pulling teeth and selling your first born backlinks can often be achieved through implementing a few common sense and relatively easy, fun practices.

1. Do follow blogs – There are lot of blogs which have the policy of Do-follow in the comments section. Blogs with  a top commenter plugin – There are many blogs with Top commenter plugins installed and if there are blogs in your niche that utilize this feature, it would be wise to take part in the community and try to come up as the top commenter every now and then. The link will stay on for weeks and that should be good enough, as it is generally a site-wide link (i.e. it appears on each and every page of that blog).

3. Hold some contests – If you can start a contest and have a good prize to give away then you will surely attract a few backlinks.

4. Give backlinks to others – If you give out links, people will link to you. It’s like the old give and take method. It may work, it may not. However, remember that when it comes to giving links, it should be valuable for your readers.

6. Take part in community/forums – If you are active in forums (related to your niche) and the opportunity presents - drop a few links to your blog or site. However, just ensure that you don’t fall in the spammer category.

7. Signatures – As an active forum member, including a link to your blog in your signature is a must. Forum links are generally always do follow links.

8. Submission to link directories – There are many directories (again do a simple Google Search) which offer free blog/site submissions.

9. Publish articles – There are lot of article submission directories. EzineArticles.com is one of the most popular ones. Just submit an article and it will help you in generating a few backlinks when people read or use your article for content on their site.

10. Guest blogging – If you can do a guest blog post, then you will get a link back in the post author profile section. Publishing a good blog post on the more popular blogs in your niche can bring in even more backlinks as high profile blogs generally get backlinks on most of their blog posts.
