ASEAN inaugurated the Commission Protection of the rights of Women and Children (ACWC)
Dear fellows,
Yesterday, ASEAN has achieved a new milestone for their commitment to be one community. After have a long discussion, finally they inaugurated the commissioner of the Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the rights of Women and Children (ACWC).
ACWC has a lot of mandate and functions, which one of it is to advocate on behalf of women and children, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized, and encourage ASEAN member states to improve their situation, as stated on article 5.4 on the Term of References of ACWC. This function and mandate, even give the ACWC more power than the ASEAN Intergovernmental
Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).
On the other side, the existence of ACWC will give us a breakthrough on any cases, especially related to the implementation of CEDAW and CRC when the national mechanism wasnt able to solve it.
So, through this information I hope we, as a part of ASEAN society will able to use this new body to make a better future for our next generation.
Fyi, Indonesia already elect Ms. Rita Serena Kalibonso, from Mitra Perempuan and Mr. Ahmad Taufan Damanik, from KKSP for its representatives.
