A dietary supplement promises to prolong life, say scientists

The new study suggests that daily administration of 1,000 mg of calcium supplements may promote longevity in women.

Calcium is an important nutrient for bone health, but previous studies have linked calcium supplements with risk of heart disease .

In the latest study, scientists wanted to see whether moderate doses of calcium gives people the benefits in terms of health. The study, in the period between 1995-2007, 9,033 Canadians took part.By the end of the study, 1,160 participants died.

The research results revealed that women who take calcium supplements have a lower risk of mortality. However, researchers have found no evidence to prove that the supplement had any effect on longevity men.

"Our study pointed out that a daily intake of calcium is associated with a lower risk of mortality among women. Benefits were observed among women taking doses up to 1.000mg per day, whether or not vitamin D supplements contain same benefits were found when calcium source were both the dairy foods and non-dairy " explained the study coordinator Dr. David Goltzman, McGill University, Montreal.
