How to Enlarge a Photo to Poster Size

Most photographs captured by a digital camera are saved as a 3x4 or 5x7 inch image format. However, if you have a picture on your computer and you want to enlarge it into a poster, it is possible to perform the action with software already installed on the computer. Just be aware though, that the image is, more than likely, going to become pixelateddue to the enlargement of the picture. But if the image has been captured by a new digital camera you probably have some leeway, as these digital cameras now have an exceptional amount of pixels per captured image (often exceeding more than 10 megapixels per picture).Open Photo Editing ProgramOpen the image editing program installed on the computer. Windows Paint is more than suitable for this process. Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and finally "Paint” (of course you can use any other image editing software packaged installed on the computer).Click "File," "Open" and choose the image you want to enlarge. Click "OK" and the document loads onto the screen. If the picture has a high pixel count it is probably going to take a few moments for the image to load onto the screen.Enlarge PhotoSelect the "Image Options" and a new window appears on the screen with all of the image features available to you.Choose the pixels and enlarge the image to a larger size (there is a reading in inches next to the pixels so you know exactly how large the pixel increase make the picture). Many posters are 16x20 or 18x24. Print companies are usually able to produce either poster size, although printer on 18x24 is going to cost more as larger paper and more ink is required. If you have a large scale printer at home make sure the image size you are selecting is supported by your printer.Save and Print PhotoClick "OK" and, after a few moments of rendering, the program loads the photo into a poster sized document. If you have a large scale printer connected to the computer, click “File,” “Print,” then choose the connected large scale printer, the number of copies you want of the poser and click “OK” to print the document. If you don’t have a large scale printer you need to save the file to a flash drive, then take the saved image to your local print company (such as Staples, Office Max, FedEx Kinkos or others) to receive a printed copy of your poster.
