Repression vs Depression

Perhaps I'm close-minded in this area, but I think the only ways of dealing with pain are repression or depression. Maybe some of both.

Pain is pain, and regardless of how strong you are, it's there.
Repression is the tough way of going about handling pain. Repress the memories, the feelings, the hurt. Move on, leaving the past behind. The truth behind this is that the past is never gone. It's a shadow, and while one can successfully refute to acknowledge its existence by never looking back, it's still there. Even the slightest glance at the shadow, the remembrance of it's presence, can have a powerful sting of emotion. But so long as once can convince him/herself that such a thing is long gone, the pain (and truth) dissipates as well.
Then there's depression. Ick ick no fun. I really dislike depression. But sometimes it's somewhat inevitable. If you can't make yourself (or don't let yourself) repress the cause of heartbreak, it leaves you saddened to the core. The all consuming haunt of what used to be is a dreadful, inescapable cloud of gloom.
As for which is better, there's no answer. I find myself favoring repression, but strikes of remembrance can send me spiraling into depression. Cope as you will, it's never a pleasant process.
