A Rewarding Career as an LVN

The healthcare employment field is growing and for Licensed Vocational Nursing careers it's expected to grow at least 20 percent in the next eight years.  An LVN career can be the right choice is you are the type of person who enjoys and wants to help people.  If you aren't sure of what an LVN is, you should find this article helpful.

What is an LVN?

An LVN, Licensed Vocational Nurse is similar to that of a Licensed Practical Nurse in most other states.  A Licensed Vocational Nurse is an entry level healthcare position that is supervised by a Registered Nurse and/or Physician.  They require more training than a Certified Nurses Assistant but less than that of a Registered Nurse.  An LVN is responsible for all types of patient care which includes bathing, dressing, and feeding the patient if necessary.  They are also responsible of updating a patient's chart, taking vital signs, and scheduling appointments.  Some of the responsibilities in different workplaces will vary but can also include dressing wounds, doing sample collecting and providing alcohol rubs.

Job Opportunities for an LVN

An LVN has the opportunity to work in hospitals, nursing homes, surgical clinics, and private medical facilities.  A Licensed Vocational Nurse also has the opportunity to supervise Certified Nurse's Assistants and Aides.  The yearly average salary for a Licensed Vocational Nurse usually starts at about $35,000, this of course varies between facilities and locations but it is expected to grow.  An experienced LVN usually averages around $60,000/year.

LVN Training

There are many programs available for those interested in becoming an LVN.  The courses must be completed at a state-approved educational program which take no more than a year.  There are many programs offered online as well.  Most LVN programs will include supervised clinical practice, as well as, classroom studies.  Most programs require applicants to pass a criminal background check and complete an admission's exam.  Upon completion of the course study applicants will be required to take and pass the National Council Licensing Examination for Practical/Vocational Nursing's written test before they can be employed.

LVN Rewards

The reward for an LVN is the job itself if you love working with and helping people.  This type of healthcare position is in demand so it provides a stable opportunity with a bright future.  A lot of Registered Nurses have started their careers as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.  And if you are interested in continuing your education farther, becoming an LVN is a good start.
