Culdocentesis: What is Culdocentesis?
Culdocentesis is a gynecologic procedure/test performed to check the abnormal fluid collected in the space between the vagina and rectum. This apsace is called cul-de-sac, thet is why, the test is called culdocentesis. Some doctors name it as vaginotomy also. The test is performed by a trained/skilled health care provider. At first pelvic examination is performed, then the cervical wall is lifted up slightly with an instrument and a long needle is passed through the vaginal wall into the space between vagina and rectum, and the fluid sample is taken out from the space.
You may ask why this test is performed! Culdocentesis may be needed when the woman feel pain abdomen or pelvic pain, when the other investigations suggest abnormal fluid in the space or when the health care provider thinks of ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
Normally there is no fluid in the space between vagina and rectum (cul-de-sac). Culdocentesis risks include rupture the bowel or uterine wall.
