How to Save Yourself from a Cruise Fire

Some people cherish on just one cruise holiday for their entire lives; such is the charm of cruise holidays. Boarding a cruise ship for going on a vacation trip is no longer a hobby of the affluents as cruise lines are of late offering discount deals, and tourists who belong to moderate income groups are also becoming able to get themselves on cruise ships for mesmerizing trips.

Problem is, cruise travelers get so absorbed in having fun that they often forget important safety concerns. When out on a cruise trip, the very first priority of the traveler is to keep himself safe from all types of natural and man-made hazards, one of which is fire eruption inside the ship.

In this article, we’ll discuss how a cruise traveler can save himself from a cruise fire. First off, whatever situation he comes across, he should never lose grips on his nerves because that could make all the difference. Once he’s mentally fully prepared to deal with the situation, he needs to

Head toward the fire exit

Assuming you are in the cabin, try to remember which side the fire exit is located and mentally calculate how many steps you need to walk to get there. If it’s morning, then you have less reasons to feel worried because once out of the cabin, you can see everything clearly. But if it’s the night, then pick a flashlight quickly from your luggage because it the fire is caused by electrical short-circuit, then the electrical system would be shut down by the time you get to the fire exit.

Save yourself from the smoke

Often fire doesn’t cause as much harm as is caused by the smoke. The smoke could fill the environment, being obtrusive to clear vision and inhaling of oxygen. To save yourself from smoke, you can crawl forward instead of walking or running. Normally, carbon monoxide stays in a bit higher altitude which means if your body is in the floor level, you won’t inhale much of carbon monoxide or any other harmful and toxic gas.

Don’t leave the cabin without packing some food

That’s because you don’t know how long you’d have to stay stranded. Fire could spoil the food storage in the ship; when you are isolated for a considerable period of time, and don’t have anything to eat, hunger might start kicking in, resulting in loss of consciousness or even seizure. So it’s wise to pack food with you.

When packing food, don’t pack the kind of food that’s stored in refrigerators because such food can get rotten very quickly if exposed to the outside temperature. Pack cookies, chocolate bars, a bottle of gam or sandwiches. Don’t pack ice cream bars because they are to be put inside refrigerators round the clock, otherwise they’d melt.

Participate in muster drills

Cruise travelers often think participating in muster drills is only optional. They can never be more wrong. A muster drill is actually a practice session that instructs the travelers how to stay safe during an emergency situation. The two important things that travelers learn are how to use life vests and quickly approach to emergency exit.

Don’t take muster drill lessons lightly. Consider those lessons as rehearsal before the actual showdown. If you are not sure about any practice lesson, then don’t hesitate to ask the instructor so he explains it to you.

Have all the fire emergency information

As soon as you land on the ship, get all the information related to fire emergency. Cruise lines normally distribute some catalogs or brochures among the passengers so they stay informed about the locations of fire exits. Keep all those papers in a separate place so if any fire suddenly occurs, you can use them for your safety.

Use portable fire extinguishers

Ships have portable fire extinguishers on every level. Check how many fire extinguishers are there where your cabin is located. If you don’t find any extinguisher, then immediately call a cruise staff and draw his attention to the unavailability. If the fire has already occurred, then detach one or two extinguishers from their places and use them. If you have to carry them, then don’t lift them because they could be heavy; drag them on the ground instead.

Remember, a cruise ship on fire is emergency like situation. Desperate situations call for desperate measures. So stay determined and do your best so you could come out of the situation unharmed.
