What is Neo-Paganism

What is Neo-Pagan

Neo-Pagan is a coverall term that covers all modern people who believe in the older, pagan faiths. This can, but does not have to be, a specific religious group such as Wicca, Shamanism, or Druidism. This can be practiced as an individual or as a group, with no right or wrong way to practice the faith. The primary connection between each of the neo-pagan pantheons is that there is a respect for the earth and nature. There is also a high respect for all living creatures, although vegitarianism is not mandatory.

Basic Beliefs

The basic beliefs of the neo-pagan faiths are similar to each other, even if the specifics are not necessarily the same. There is the general belief that all things are connected and that the earth is sacred. This belief leads the neo-pagans to attempt to better the world and save the environment. This also helps to foster a belief that all people and animals are sacred. Another facet of the neo-pagan belief system is the belief in more than one deity. These deities are often expressed as male and female counterparts. These deities can symbolize different features of nature or different facets of human nature. They can be called upon for assistance in the daily life of the believer.

Holy Days

There are 8 holy days in most neo-pagan traditions. These holy days are related to the seasonal changes. They also correspond to the lunar and solar cycles, including the two equinoxes and the cross-equinoxes. These holy days are celebrated with festivities and ceremonies that are specific to the date. These holy days are days in which the neo-pagan community is able to come together and celebrate their faith and family. There is almost always food and drink offered after or at these occasions. Holy days can be celebrated alone or with the group. Most Covens offer open circles for people who normally worship alone to join in a group ceremony.

Tools of the Faith

There are many different tools that are associated with neo-pagans. The most familiar is the wand, which can be as elaborate as a highly decorated wooden, metal or stone piece or as simple as a small stick pulled from a tree. Other tools include an anthem that is used to cut incense or other ceremonial items, incense, candles, salt, water and a small bowl. These items can be dedicated to the faith or they can be used in every day life as well as rituals. These tools are often used in a specific ritual area, although ceremonies can be held anywhere and at any time.

Finding More Information

There are a lot of books about the neo-pagan faiths and Wicca in particular. Silver Ravenwolf is one of the best known pagan authors and she has many different books on the market that help to educate would-be neo-pagans. There are also a number of websites that offer information on neo-paganism. Many neo-pagan groups advertise their open circles online or have pagan days festivals. This can be a good way to find first hand information and to get to know the people who practice in your area.
