A Very Special Gift

It was February, 2010, when I first laid eyes on her beautiful face. She was small, about the size of a sack of potatoes, and had eyes that seemed to see right through you. The smirk coming from her black lips instantly made me smile, too. Hmm, I believe it was love at first site. She was a special gift from the heart. A gift from my husband, that I will forever treasure.
At first, I didn’t quite no what to make of her. What was she? All I could see was a mass of matted hair, all dirty, and wild in nature. A warm bath, some sudsy soap, and a good brushing made all the world of difference. I was now the proud owner of a fury little creature. What she was remained a mystery for sometime. After numerous hours of hashing over names, I finally decided to name the new edition to the our family, Molli. One look at her sweet face and Molli just seemed to be the right name.
When I first took her to the vet, I was still in the puzzled state. I didn’t know what she was and didn’t have a clue about what her needs might be. After going around the examination table several times, the Vet, finally stated that she was definitely a keeper. I was told that my sweet little fur ball was actually a very expensive West Highland White Terrier also known as a Westie. Oh boy, was I in heaven. I was now the proud owner of a Westie. How could that be? She was adopted from the Humane Society and I always believed that you only found mixed breed dogs at those kind of places. Boy, was I wrong.
West Highland White Terriers originated in Scotland. They are a small breed with females only weighing between 13-16 pounds. They average in height between 9 to 11 inches. Known as a self-confident dog, with a big personality for adventure. One look at their cute little faces and you will notice deep-set almond shaped eyes which are dark in color. It is the eyes of these little dogs that captivates you and makes you love them even more. The funniest feature of this breed is the shape of their tails. Their tails actually are shaped like a carrot. With a distinctive white coat, a huge skull, scissor bite and a large black nose, what is not to love about this breed?
As weeks turned into days and days turned into months, I found myself falling more in love with this little dog. She had spunk, was extremely smart, and could entertain you just by fetching her toys. What a great gift from my wonderful husband. I needed some comforting, a good friend, someone who would listen and not be judgmental. I was going through a traumatic time in my life and never dreamed that owning a dog could make all the world of difference in my life. Some people will tell you that she is only just a dog, but I will tell you she is so much more than they will ever know. To me, she is a blessing sent from God above to help comfort me and guide me through this past year. Molli, is more than just your average dog, she is family. To me, that says it all. Big thanks to my husband, for my little friend. For in this Westie, I have found strength and for that I will be forever grateful in so many ways. Thank you Molli for being who you are….My Special Gift.
