What is metformin metformin is a drug used to treat diabetes mellitus, commonly called as 'diabetes'. Metformin is used specifically as a drug for type 2 diabetes. Doctors prescribe this drug to patients who are overweight or obese and have stable kidney and functioning normally (as it is harmful for people with kidney disorders). Sometimes also used as a remedy for polycystic disease ovary syndrome. If not managed correctly and accurately, this drug may cause some side effects.

 Side Effects of Metformin

In the field of medical sciences, side effect, refers to some or another form of adverse effect of a drug. The side effect of the first and most commonly observed of metformin is lactic acidosis. In this condition, metformin, makes the body produce lactic acid which enters the blood flow. This phenomenon is usually seen in patients suffering from kidney disorders to the consumption of metformin. The side effect secondly most commonly seen is gastrointestinal upset. This side effect refers to a reaction of the digestive system and is reflected by cramping abdominal, nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting. This side effects is not very harmful for the body, while the patient makes it very uncomfortable. Gastrointestinal upset is observed in patients, when metformin is prescribed for the first time. The increase in dose also makes that patients suffering from gastrointestinal upset.

Sometimes the human body does not accept metformin, since body shows some physical reactions. These reactions are associated with gastrointestinal discomfort. The person who has been prescribed the drug begins to feel sleepy and weak suddenly and directed light. If body totally rejected any intake below, the patient begins to have frequent headaches, a sensation of cold, stomach pain, or he can vomit. In such situations, it is advisable to visit your doctor immediately.

Some patients are even allergic to metformin. This is not done unless and until the patient takes it really. If the body is allergic to the drug, then, the patient may begin to have hives and will find it difficult to breathe; face, lips, and tongue swelling will begin. Some patients also experience a sore throat. In such situations, stop the dose and visit a doctor.

Some other serious side effects are as follows: * fall in pulse and effort.
    * Swelling of the skin or weight gain very fast (this symptom can not performed immediately).
    * Fever, flu and chills, accompanied by pain of body.

Some other milder symptoms that appear until the body gets accustomed to metformin are as follows: * muscle pain and headache.
    * Weakness.
    * Pain nausea and stomach.

A combination of metformin with some other drugs, sometimes causing side effects. Some medications that increase the sugar in the blood should not be taken by together with metformin. Seizure medicines, thyroid or birth control pills medicine tend to increase until sugar levels in the blood, if they are accompanied by metformin. Medications such as beta-blockers, sulfa drugs, probenecid, on the other hand, tend to lower blood sugar levels if used with metformin. Drugs such as morphine, quinidine, furosemide, digoxin, tend to react with metformin.

Due to these reasons, it is always advisable to use metformin, only if the doctors prescribed. Also if a doctor prescribes metformin, be sure to inform you of other medicinal products or the intake of drugs.
