So You Think You Can Write?

I recently applied for a job online as a freelance writer with Suite 101, an independent online magazine written and edited by professionals. Finding ways to showcase my blog and my writing style is something I enjoy doing and I'm always up for a challenge. I just didn't know how much of a challenge I was in for.

The application process is pretty routine. Name, email address, method you'd like to receive your compensation and the submission of two articles written by the applicant. Easy enough.

To be honest I really didn't think I'd be hired. I love writing and think I do a decent job conveying a message but a real-honest-to-goodness freelance writer. Surprisingly I was hired. Talk about being excited.

Surely this mag doesn't just hire anybody. The articles I submitted were actually good enough to get me through the virtual doors of a "real" online magazine. Then I met my editor.....dom dom dommmm!!!

Each writer is assigned an editor that critiques their work. All I can say is I was quickly brought down from the clouds with the stroke of her RED pen! Well, it wasn't really a red pen but I was reminded of how my English instructor used to tear my writing to shreds in an attempt to make the finished piece as polished as it could possibly be.

The overall article was a good. Her edits were minor. It's just that I kept having to go back and do little things. Things I knew better than to have done in the first place. It's really been a learning experience.

If you're interested in taking your writing to another level, visit the site and apply.
