As a Christian home-school mom, I am aware that there is a yearly debate among some on whether or not Christians should even acknowledge Halloween. A few years ago, I wrote an article that addressed some of these concerns with Family Alternatives to Halloween.While some may not agree with me, and that is their right to do so, I do believe there are many “Fall” Family Friendly activities that can be enjoyed throughout the month of October without the negative influences that some associate with the end of October.

• Visit a Pumpkin Patch – Many communities and churches host annual pumpkin patches as fund raisers. Most offer pumpkins of all sizes and usually offer hay rides, games and fun Fall food at reasonable prices.
• Enjoy a little family friendly competition with a Bake Off. Invite family, friends and neighbors to enter their favorite Fall desserts, cakes, pies and cookies. After the judging, award fun prizes and then have a cake walk for the kids or auction off the desserts to raise money for local charities.
• Throw a Tailgate Party  at home, in the neighborhood, at a school or local church parking lot. Set up screens or big TVs to watch the game and invite participants to bring their favorite foods and wear  sports jerseys, football or cheerleader costumes. Provide a few air bouncers, carnival games, balloons and face paint to keep kids entertained during the big game.
• Host a free outdoor Christian family movie night. Set up a large screen in a backyard, park or parking lot. Show a family friendly movie like, “Facing the Giants,” ” October Baby,” or “Time Changer.” Have families bring their own picnic supper to spread on the ground and enjoy during the movie or serve free drinks and  popcorn.
• Take advantage of   community Fall Festivals and Trunk or Treats hosted by area elementary schools, churches, fire departments, police departments and hospitals. These activities are designed with families in mind. They are safe, well lit, kid friendly and usually free.
• Plan a kid friendly costume party with a theme like: What Will I Be When I Grow Up?, Noah’s Ark, Bible Characters, Zoo Animals, or the Wild West. Make it
  an annual event that allows the kids to dress up, play games and get treats without the worry of outside influences.

The month of October does not necessarily need to be a time for Christians to retreat, stay at home and not participate in community activities. On the contrary, use these ideas above as opportunities to minister, meet, greet and fellowship with others looking for the same kind of safe family friendly Fall fun.
