The Wisdom Of A Money Belt

There's many travelers that may not be aware of the necessity of using a money belt while away from their comfort zone. Some may even refuse to wear one because they can be uncomfortable at times. However, a belt or pouch to hide money in is absolutely vital when traveling to an unknown area.

What Kind of Belt is it?

Basically, it's a hidden pouch for money that uses Velcro to strap onto section of the body hidden by clothing. The most common hiding places are the legs, upper arms, and waist. There's several different styles, however, and most travelers can find one that appeals to them. There's some variations of the basic design, which can help in finding the right option. Some women's scarves are designed with a small, hidden pouch for hiding money. Other money pouches resemble plain or cheap jewelry and are worn in plain sight. Although these are more of a pouch than a belt, the basic need to hide money is met in either case.

Is it Really Necessary?

Actually, despite what part of the world is being visited, having a money belt is a good idea.  Even the best parts of the world have crime, and pick pockets and thieves know that airports are abounding with tourists and money. There is no situation scarier than being in a strange country with no money and no identification. This situation can easily be prevented, however, by keeping only a small amount of money in traditional places, and keeping the largest amount of cash and identification well hidden and very secret.

In addition to keeping money safe, a money pouch can also keep tourists within a daily budget.  If it's difficult to access the money, it's less likely to be spent. This makes for a more enjoyable, manageable trip, and ensures that each day can be enjoyed as planned.

Where Can a Money Belt be Purchased?

A money pouch, scarf, or belt can be purchased at any retailer who sells travel items or luggage.  Larger retail stores may have a limited selection as well. The largest selection can be found online though, from a variety of money belt manufacturers. Generally the cost is between $10 and $20, depending upon the options available. When considering the consequences of not having a hiding place for cash and important items, this seems a small price to pay.

Although it's uncommon to find tourists in areas that are high in crime, it's important to remember there is no such thing as crime-free. The chances of encountering a thief may be very low, but the chance is still there. It's much better to be prepared with a money belt than to be lost, penniless, and stranded in a foreign country with few options available. Most countries and people are friendly and welcoming to tourists, but there's always those who will take advantage of a situation. As always, the best protection is prevention and a quality money belt can help.
