Snowmobile Parts and Accessories
When buying a snowmobile, there are many parts that you need to keep an eye on, and many accessories that you can buy for it. Here are the main parts of the snowmobile to watch, and some of the common accessories you can purchase to spice up your sled.
Parts:
- Track. This is an obvious piece of the sled that needs to be looked after. If yours is studded, you need to check your studs to make sure none are loose, or coming out of the track. If they are, they need to come off because they can ruin your heat exchanger.
- Heat Exchanger. The heat exchanger is underneath the snowmobile. If you were to take the track off, you would see the 2 rubber strips that run under the frame. Click here to see a picture. The heat exchangers use the snow thrown up from the track to cool the engine, so it's important that these aren't damaged.
- Ski's. Check to make sure that the ski's aren't cracked or damaged and look underneath the ski's to check that the carbide's are still good.
- Carbide's.The carbides are the pieces of metal that the ski rests on. You will damage these quicker if you are riding on rough, ungroomed terrain like rocks and roads. Make sure there are still carbides there, and if not you need to purchase more.
- Spark Plugs. It's good to have an extra set of these with you on the trail. Most new snowmobiles have a storage compartment right next to the spark plugs to hold 2 extras. Make sure they're there.
- Belt. Be sure to have an extra belt with you on the trail. If the one you have breaks, you won't be going anywhere. Again, most sleds have a storage area on the sled to hold an extra belt.
- Wheels. Check the wheels on your track for cracks or any other damage. Bad wheels won't allow your track to move correctly, causing bigger problems.
- Brakes. It would be a shame not to have them when you're going down a steep hill.
- All Liquids. These aren't parts, but they need to be checked frequently. Oil, Gas, and Coolant are the main ones. Take a peek at them regularly.
- Cover. This isn't really a part, but it covers the parts. Keep your sled covered to protect all the parts and the body of your sled.
By checking to make sure these parts are in good working order, you will lessen your chances for a breakdown, or be able to fix certain things in case the snowmobile does break down. Check out my hub to learn about preventative maintenance for your sled.

Now that your parts are in working order, it's time to spice up the sled! Here are a few common accessories to add to your snowmobile.
- Handlebar Wind Deflectors. These add not only style to your sled, but they keep your hands warmer by deflecting the wind.
- Lens Covers. Find the color to match your sled and you can buy the front and rear lens cover if you choose.
- Silencer. Contrary to the name, this does not silence your snowmobile. It makes it louder! Throw on a new pipe and you'll be the loudest one around
- Handlebar Riser. Need to raise up your handlebars or want a racing look? Add the riser to your machine.
- Shock Covers. Protects the shocks and adds a new look to your sled.
- Decals. Decals can be purchased and adhered to any part of the snowmobile. Just don't cover up your registration!
