Hacks to increase your screen space

Anything that can help improve your productivity and that of your colleagues is worth considering. Thankfully there are some really simple ways to do this. Even something as basic as increasing the number of monitors you are using can help boost your work efforts, as more screens means more space to complete work and switch between tasks. A more multifunctional desktop means you can work on projects, answer emails and do research all at the same time without your monitor getting clogged up with windows and tabs.

Increasing screen space might sound complicated, but Syntax IT Software London has put together some really easy — and affordable — ways to do it.

Microsoft 10

One of the great new features on Microsoft 10 is the ability to switch between different ‘virtual’ desktops, which basically means having many different screens on a single device. It seems fancy, but it’s actually incredibly easy use.

Firstly, you need to add a desktop, which simply means going into the new Task View pane and clicking ‘New desktop’. Ta da! You have multiple screens. And you don’t have to stop at two. Microsoft 10 lets you add as many different desktops to your device as you like, so you can be working on as many simultaneous tasks as you need.

Once you’ve added your screens, it’s equally easy to switch between them. Open the Task View pane again and it will come up with a thumbnail of all your open screens – just pick the one you want to go to. In the Task View pane, you can also move windows between different desktops and close any open desktops that you no longer need.

Splashtopxdisplay

Splashtop is a great piece of software that allows you to turn your tablet or smartphone into a second screen for your PC. It’s compatible with all desktops, all Android or Apple tablets and all Android or Apple smartphones, meaning you’re pretty much guaranteed to be able to use it.

The benefits of having a physical second screen rather than a virtual one is that it gives you the freedom of two different device storages, as well as the added security of not trusting all of your documents to one device.

You might be worried about transferring files between the two devices, but you don’t need to be. Splashtopxdisplay allows you to move files between your two screens freely and without hassle — which is great if you have different projects on the go on different devices. Splashtop is also very easy to get onto your PC: just go to www.splashtop.com/wiredxdisplay and hit the download button.

A Simple Connection

If you don’t have the latest Microsoft offering and don’t want to download software onto your computer, then this is a really easy way to work with multiple screens. Lots of businesses house PCs for employees to use, but by bringing a laptop to work, employees can get all the benefits of increased screen space – all they need is an Ethernet cable.

Firstly, connect the PC and laptop together by plugging the cable into the laptop’s Ethernet port and the PC’s Ethernet adapter. Once you’ve done that, start up the laptop and go to the ‘Network and Sharing Centre’ in the Control Panel. Here you’ll be able to double-click on the ‘Unidentified Network’ pop up and then choose your PC from the option list to make a connection.  And that’s it: you’ll be able to work freely on both screens.

Hopefully this has erased the myth that working on multiple screens is used only by the computer world’s greatest minds. With any of these options, increasing your screen space is both simple and worthwhile.
