How To Pack Tapered Roller Bearings With Grease?

Do you know you use bearings everyday in your daily life? Shocked!!

Yes, there are various devices around us like elevators, vehicles etc. which rely on different types of bearings like roller bearings and ball bearings. There is difference in their manufacturing material, size, shape and types. One of the commonly used roller bearings is tapered roller bearing. Having capacity to absorb both radial and axial loads, these bearings are perfect for lower speed and high load applications.

Design of tapered roller bearings:

These are designed in two-piece separable design including cup and cone. The design of the bearing allows internal clearance optimization when bearing is mounted. Roller and ball bearing manufacturers basically design single row, sealed row and matched set tapered roller bearings.

No doubt bearings are very important and beneficial, but only when taken care properly. We live on food and what is food for bearings?

Lubrication is the food that ensures proper functioning of all the bearings. You need to be very careful in selection of lubricant and the process. Selection of wrong lubricant or doing it in improper way can cause high damage for the tapered roller bearings. It also helps in carrying away heat, protecting bearing surface and cutting down friction.

Find a few tips below to ensure right packing of bearings with grease:

There are basically two techniques to pack the bearing with grease: by hand and by using a mechanical grease packer.

By hand:

• Put on latex gloves and take a blob of grease on hand.

• Push the large end of the bearing cone assembly into the grease to enable the grease to enter between the rollers, cage and cone.

• Rotate the entire cone assembly while pushing grease into large end to force out grease evenly around the complete small end.

By mechanical grease packer:

• Wear latex gloves and keep the bearing cone assembly into the grease packer funnel.

• Join the large end with conical retainer and press down the retainer to enable the grease force between the rollers, cage and cone.

• Blot extra grease on the outside of the bearing cone assembly.

You can also talk to the bearing supplier for different lubrication methods and the lubricants to suit your bearing requirements.
