Major Collision Reported on I-285
On February 2009, a collision involving a MARTA bus and a semi-tractor trailer blocked the northbound lanes on Interstate 285. A massive storm front that moved through the area was believed to have contributed to the accident. The driver was the only occupant on the bus at the time of the wreck. Neither vehicle driver suffered injuries and the investigation was ongoing at the time of the report.
Parents and Seven Children Involved in I-85 Vehicle Accident
A man, his wife and seven children, aged 11 to 9 months, were traveling north in a Nissan Xterra on Interstate-85 when the vehicle left the road and overturned in a wooded area. The driver's side of the vehicle hit a tree, killing the driver. Two of the children were airlifted to Atlanta for treatment. The wife and the five remaining children were treated for minor injuries and released. An investigation was ongoing. The family was reportedly returning home after visiting relatives.
Former College Track Star Dies in Collision
On July 2014. an athlete was on his way home to Florida when traveling on Interstate-75 when a tire on the vehicle blew-out. The student pulled onto the side of the road. He was in the process of making a phone call when a semi-trailer truck came over the hill, struck the car and knocked the vehicle into the track star. The young man was at the University of Georgia for a training event. He graduated with a degree in sociology the previous year. In addition to awards gained while attending the facility, he also won a variety of medals in various world-class events.
Local Police Officer Involved in Collision with DUI Driver
On a news report last September 2014, a sheriff's deputy escaped severe injuries when a teen driving a KIA Optima rear-ended the patrol car. The force of the impact rendered both vehicles unrecognizable. The deputy suffered a head laceration and a concussion from hitting the cage that separates the front and rear seats. The teen driver was not seriously injured despite the fact that his vehicle rolled multiple times. An investigation revealed drug paraphernalia in the young man's vehicle. Results of drug-testing were reported as pending. The teen told police that he was looking at his cell phone at the time of the impact. The youth was being charged with multiple citations that included driving with a suspended license, possession of a controlled substance and failure to use due care.
