The Good and The Bad of Solar Energy Homes

It wasn’t that common for solar energy homes a few decades ago.  The cost was high and recouping the investment wasn’t very good.  Today, however, because of technology these homes are becoming more popular.

There are some advantages for having solar energy homes but just like everything else there is also the disadvantages of these homes.  When you look at the good, you see that these homes don’t supply any contaminants into the air making them environmentally friendly and they don’t make any noise.  There is also the significant savings one has when it comes to their electric bills and after the initial investment has been recouped, it’s free electric.  There’s a low cost maintenance associated with the solar panels which is also an advantage.

These are all good points of having a solar energy home, but there are also some negatives that need to be addressed especially if you are just looking into making your home a solar energy home.  The biggest downfall about solar energy homes is the cost of the initial investment.  Some individuals may need an initial investment of $20,000 or more.  Not realistic for a lot of people.

Another one of the bad points of solar energy homes is that there is quite of bit of energy waste.  In order to convert the dc energy to ac energy approximately 8% of the energy is lost during conversion.  But that’s not the only possible loss in energy.  If the panels don’t have daylight, energy is not absorbed thus rainy days and locations of heavy fog or smog can affect the absorption to maintain power and these homes may not fair overnight with electricity.

The chances of someone who has a solar energy home experiencing a blackout is usually slim.  Solar energy homes don’t have to have direct continuous sunlight to be able to sustain power overnight.  The new solar panels can absorb energy even on overcast days they just don’t generate as much energy.

Most solar energy homes have sufficient systems to keep them functioning uninterruptedly.  And although the initial investment can be high most of these types of homes can recoup their investment in no time at all.

The best advice anyone can ask for if from those who have transformed their homes into a solar energy home years ago and compare it to someone who has done it in the recent years to see if converting your home into a solar energy home is the right move for you.
