How to make your own compost bins

Every gardener looks for the easiest and most labor saving ways to go about their beloved hobby, and if a gardener can make their own compost bins their task to have a lush yard and garden is that much simple. When you make your own compost bins you can not only have a wonderful garden additive at your disposal for whenever it is needed, but you also have the ability to make a positive impact on the environment. Composting plants and flowers reduces the need for harsh chemicals that eventually end up in ground water supplies, and organic material that finds it's way to the compost bin reduces the space that is taken up in landfills.

The materials that are needed to make your own compost bins are basic - little more than some wood for posts, nails, some fine screen and a tarp to cover the bins with. When you make your own compost bins take a few minutes to ponder what would be the ideal location on your property to place them. This decision can reduce your work by having less distance to carry the compost to where your plants and flowers are located and can keep any odors that are associated with the composting process from being experienced in the home or in a frequently used relaxation area outside.

Once the location where you will make your own compost bins has been established and the materials have been obtained it will usually only take 2 to 3 hours to build your compost bins. A very good way to make your own compost bins is to make three bins of equal size connected together. The two outside bins will be used for compost and the middle bin can be filled with top soil.

First, cut 8 pieces of 2 x 4's to a length of 4 feet each, and then dig 8 post holes to a depth of 16 inches spaced 3 feet apart on the shape of a rectangle, or two lines of post holes with 4 holes in each. Place a 2 x 4 in each holes and fill it with concrete and let it dry overnight. Using a roll of fine-mesh metal screen go around the outside of the posts and nail the screen to the posts leaving the front side open. Lastly, take two small pieces of screen and nail them to the inside posts to separate and distinguish the three bins. The final step to make your own compost bins is to begin composting, and don't forget to cover your compost bins with a tarp to keep the rain out.
