Erector Set History and Trivia
The erector set was invented in 1911 by inventor AC Gilbert and was patented in 1913 and was manufactured in New Haven, Conneticutt until 1967 when the company filed bankruptcy. The company was purchased by the Gabriel company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, current erector sets are manufactured by the Meccano company. The current sets are made flat instead of the curved parts of earlier models.
With hundreds of different Erector sets being prodeuced over the generations some models have become rare and collectible. the most famous model was probably the No 12 1/2 deluxe model kit that came with blueprints to make a mysterious walking robot.
The Erector set is beleived to be the first toy that was part of a National advertising campaign in America thats sucess helped make the erector set part of the American culture.
In 1949 an Erector set was used to make an artificial heart that bypassed a dogs heart for nearly an hour
Walt Disney World used a Erector set as a model to build the "Soarin" at Waly Disney"s World near Orlando,Florida.
